St David's Island

St David's Island

Overview

Introduction

Fishing and boatbuilding are the main industries on this island located at the eastern end of Bermuda. St. David's is the site of the international airport but manages to maintain a quiet atmosphere.

Carter House is one of Bermuda's oldest structures. It is said to have been built in 1640 by Christopher Carter, a crew member of the Sea Venture who returned to live on the island. The house is now a museum of the island's families and traditions.

Other highlights of the island include St. David's Lighthouse, at the eastern end of the island, and St. David's Battery at Great Head Park, where two large artillery guns from the early 1900s sit atop Bermuda's highest cliffs.
