Geghard

Overview

Introduction

This monastery was named after its most famous religious artifact, the lance that was said to have pierced the side of Christ (the lance has since been moved to Echmiadzin). Travelers should still visit Geghard, which has plenty to see, even without the lance: The buildings of this fascinating monastery were carved from solid granite. A total of four churches were hewed out of the hillsides and valley, with the uppermost boasting unbelievable acoustics. The oldest dates from the 1200s (don't miss the two carved lions over the doorway). Animal sacrifices take place outside the church on Sunday. Geghard is usually seen in conjunction with Garni on a day trip from Yerevan. 25 mi/40 km east of Yerevan.
