Bangor

Bangor

Overview

Introduction

Most people only pass through Bangor, Wales, crossing its landmark suspension bridge (built by Thomas Telford in 1826) on their way to the Isle of Anglesey. That's a shame, really, because this town, 192 mi/309 km northwest of Cardiff, has a number of attractions, including a university, a museum and an 11th-century cathedral. The extravagant Penrhyn Castle, built in neo-Norman style on the edge of town, was actually built in the 1820s and looks more like a mansion.
