Once one of the poorest counties in the country, Tunica has been revitalized by the introduction of casinos. Its resurrection has been called the Tunica Miracle, because the gaming industry now provides more than 16,000 jobs in a county that previously had extremely high unemployment and poverty rates. It draws a lot of people from Memphis, just 25 mi/40 km north. Driving into Tunica County can seem a bit like a hallucination: After miles/kilometers of rural countryside dominated by cotton fields, you're startled to see large, brightly lit casino-resorts rising out of the Delta. In the vicinity of Robinsonville and the town of Tunica are gaming establishments such as Bally's, Harrah's, Fitzgerald's, Sam's Town and more. Mind you, these are no backwater slots parlors: The casinos boast themed restaurants, first-class hotels, golf courses, theaters that host famous performers, and child-care complexes. Other diversions include the Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club (featuring a 212-acre/85-hectare public course and four Davis Cup indoor clay tennis courts), and The Casino Factory Outlet Mall.
Another attraction is the Tunica River Park. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, it is a US$26 million facility located on the banks of the Mississippi River that houses a world-class museum and offers cruises on the Mississippi River aboard the Tunica Queen. 160 mi/260 km north of Jackson.
