This town, located 325 mi/525 km southeast of Jeddah, gets its name from the market that was traditionally held there every Thursday (Khamis means "Thursday" in Arabic, and Khamis Mushayt means "the Thursday market" of the Mushayt clan). Khamis lies in the country's cool, fertile southwestern region and has distinctive and colorful architecture.
While there, take a short excursion to the Black Mountain volcano to view rock drawings. Black Mountain is the kingdom's highest peak, at 9,000 ft/2,800 m. Allow one night to see it all.
