Tepotzotlan

Tepotzotlan

Overview

Introduction

Located 22 mi/35 km north of Mexico City, Tepotzotlan is home to the church of St. Francis Xavier—now the National Museum of the Viceregal Period.

The church is considered the second-best example of the highly embellished Churrigueresque-style architecture in Mexico and houses religious paintings, statues, pictures and antiques dating from the colonial period. Much of the church was built by local Indians, and pre-Hispanic motifs are scattered throughout.

This town is the venue for some of Mexico's most lavish pastorelas, traditional Christmas performances that date back to medieval times.
