Los Roques Islands

Overview

Introduction

The isolated archipelago of Los Roques is one of Venezuela's 43 national parks, with some 250 coral reefs and more than 40 islands (some of them barely large enough for a beach towel). If you enjoy diving, snorkeling, fishing or sunning, Los Roques will likely strike you as paradise. The islands can be reached only by boat or small plane, so it's an idyllic place to escape. Most visitors see this beautiful area as a day trip from Margarita Island or Caracas, but we recommend staying over at least one night if you have the time. Gran Roque, the main island, has accommodations, or you could opt to overnight on a yacht or a sailboat. Arrange trips to the various islands through the local fishermen. Sunscreen is essential because there is virtually no shade. The park is located 95 mi/150 km north of Caracas, and visitors must pay a fee of about 13 bolivars upon arrival.
