Bayt Al Faqih

Bayt Al Faqih

Overview

Introduction

Bayt al Faqih is most famous for its Friday market. Although there's not much else to see, we think this is another market that's really worth a visit—it began in the 18th century as a coffee-trading center and drew merchants from as far away as India and Morocco. This large market—where you can buy everything from camels to clothing—has both open-air and covered spaces and is divided into specialty sections. As many as 1,000 traders congregate to sell their wares or provide services. Feel free to take photos of just about anything except the blood-sucking cuppers, who use glass jars in a practice called "cupping" to relieve the patient of "bad blood." 35 mi/55 km by road southeast of Hodeidah.
