West Caicos is an uninhabited island in the Turks and Caicos, 10 mi/16 km southwest of Providenciales, that was once home to pirates, who, like visitors today, had to take any comforts they needed with them. The island currently has no facilities, but its surrounding waters are a favorite spot for diving operators out of Providenciales.
The West Caicos Marine National Park protects a large portion of the waters around the island. Some of the best dive sites within the park include Gullies, the Rock Garden, Highway to Heaven, and Spanish Anchor.
Lake Catherine, the island's large saltwater lake, is where flamingos nest and other wildlife congregate. Other sights include Solitude Beach, an abandoned settlement (Yankee Town) and the ruins of sisal- and salt-industry buildings. West Caicos also has several offshore dive sites.
