Mrauk-U

Mrauk-U

Overview

Introduction

Mrauk-U, Myanmar, 180 mi/290 km southwest of Mandalay, was the capital of the Arakan empire in what's more recently known as Rakhine state during the 15th-18th centuries. Today, the empire is gone, but its ruins remain—go to Mrauk-U (pronounced mraw-oo) to visit the ancient Royal Palace and then travel by horse cart to the Htukkan Thein (ordination hall) and the Shittaung Pagoda (Temple of 80,000 Buddhas). Many other Buddhist temples and pagodas abound. Some people refer to Mrauk-U as Little Bagan.
