Overview

Introduction

Set in the rolling plains of the Alentejo and 120 mi/190 km southeast of Lisbon, Beja, Portugal, merits a few hours' visit. The town's main claim to fame is that it was founded by Julius Caesar.

Stop at the town museum, which was once a 15th-century convent. Its cloister has beautiful azulejo decorations. The little church Santo Amaro dates back to Visigoth times and has columns from the seventh century.
