Hiiumaa, the second-largest island of Estonia, has beautiful scenery. Hiiumaa and its surrounding islets have been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Preserve.
Although short on high-end accommodations, Hiiumaa is far less frequented by tourists than Saaremaa. The island's most significant landmark is Kopu Lighthouse on the northwestern tip of Hiiumaa. It was built on the orders of the Hanseatic League in 1490, and its beam of light could be seen from 25 mi/40 km away. You can climb it and enjoy great views over to Saaremaa as well as across the whole of Hiiumaa. It's best to go at sunset.
Tahkuna Lighthouse, built by Gustave Eiffel's engineering company, also offers dramatic views across the Baltic. The lighthouse is the site of a memorial to the children who died in the Estonia ferry tragedy on 28 September 1994.
