Hsipaw

Overview

Introduction

Hsipaw (pronounced see-paw), Myanmar, was once a Shan royal city, at least until its last prince, Sao Kya Seng, was kidnapped in 1962. (The saga has been chronicled by the prince's Austrian wife, Inge Sargent, in her memoir Twilight Over Burma: My Life as a Shan Princess). In recent years, Hsipaw has emerged as a hilltop trekking destination surrounded by several minority villages. If trekking is not your thing, the riverside town also has a lively market, temples and teak monasteries. Hsipaw is 124 mi/200 km northeast of Mandalay.
