History and archaeology buffs will enjoy the town of Hisarya located 25 mi/40 km north of Plovdiv—there are plenty of Roman walls, gates and other ruins scattered about.
Other draws include two 1,300-year-old Christian basilicas and an excellent museum displaying artifacts found in local excavations. In the summer, attend a performance in the open-air theater. The natural hot springs, renowned since the time of Solomon, are quite popular.
Most visitors see Hisarya as a day trip from Plovdiv, but the town rates an overnight stay (or longer, if you're visiting the spa).
