Hallein

Hallein

Overview

Introduction

About 18 mi/29 km south of Salzburg, deep in the Alps and close to the German border, this town has a notable Celtic collection located in the Keltenmuseum, at Pflegerplatz 5. It’s also home to the amazing "World of Salt" mine, which once provided the mineral which fueled Salzburg’s wealth. While the mine is no longer in operation (the country’s only working salt mine is in Altaussee), visitors can hop aboard a train to tour the mine, then embark on a raft through an underground lake, capped off with a slide down one of the coal miners' tunnels (overalls are provided). 15 euros adults. Salzbergstrasse 21. Phone 322-002-400. https://www.salzwelten.at/en/hallein.
