Zurrieq

Zurrieq

Overview

Introduction

Zurrieq, Malta, is a good-size village 5.5 mi/9 km south of Valletta that retains much of its medieval core, which predates the arrival on the island by the Knights of St. John.

Nearby is the departure point for boat trips to the Blue Grotto, a popular natural beauty spot on Malta. The small boats leave from the rocky inlet of Wied iz-Zurrieq below the town for a 25-minute tour of the sea caves and arches carved out of the rugged limestone cliffs. The water in the caves is amazingly clear, and the reflection of the sunlight turns it a striking, deep-blue color. There is a lot of boat traffic nearby, which diminishes the experience a bit.
